James Hetfield, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Metallica, described “Master of Puppets” as a song about losing control, specifically to addiction. In interviews, Hetfield revealed that the “puppet master” represents drugs, and the song tells the story of how a person begins to serve what they once thought they controlled.
“I wrote it about drugs basically. How, instead of you controlling what you’re taking and doing, it’s the drugs controlling you.” Hetfield said. “You’re the puppet.”
The lyrics echo this dynamic of domination and dependence: “Taste me, you will see / more is all you need” and “Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams.” The imagery of “Chop your breakfast on a mirror” points clearly to cocaine use, while “Needlework the way” alludes to heroin addiction. Fans often highlight how the verses are voiced from the perspective of the drug itself – the manipulative “master” speaking to its helpless victim.
