“Paranoid” is the heavy metal anthem hammered out in the fires of uncertainty. The song takes the listener headlong into the rather chaotic mind of a man who has been consumed by paranoia.
Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath bassist, wrote those haunting lyrics, and he let the secret edge of the song slip to Mojo magazine in 2013: “It’s really about depression. Back then, I couldn’t separate depression from paranoia. Drugs really made everything even worse. You’d take a hit and suddenly feel like the whole world was closing in on you.”
Butler also unraveled the making of this song in 2004 in an interview with Guitar World: “Most of the Paranoid album came together in the wake of our debut. We blasted through it live in just a few days. “Paranoid” itself wasn’t even supposed to exist-it was a last-minute filler. Tony cranked out the riff; I slammed together the lyrics; and Ozzy sang them straight off the page. No time for second guesses.”
In an interview with Songfacts, guitar legend Tony Iommi added: “It was never meant to be anything more than a filler. Just a quick, short track to pad the album. But something about it stuck. When it became a single, it exploded. For many, Paranoid was their gateway to Black Sabbath.”
What began as an afterthought became the anthem of a riff-driven explosion that defined an era.

Finished with my woman ’cause
She couldn’t help me with my mind
People think I’m insane because
I am frowning all the time
All day long I think of things
But nothing seems to satisfy
Think I’ll lose my mind
If I don’t find something to pacify
Can you help me
Occupy my brain?
Oh yeah
I need someone to show me
The things in life that I can’t find
I can’t see the things that make
True happiness, I must be blind
Make a joke and I will sigh
And you will laugh and I will cry
Happiness I cannot feel
And love to me is so unreal
And so as you hear these words
Telling you now of my state
I tell you to enjoy life
I wish I could but it’s too late
